There are hundreds of families who provide foster care for the AWLA. The program is designed to provide temporary at-home care and enrichment, especially for animals in need of regular medications or health management, animals too young for adoption, and those who need extra socialization. Animals overwhelmed by the bustle of the adoption floor also benefit from a stay in a home, where they can learn to coexist with people and perhaps other pets — and be observed to provide valuable information for the shelter’s adoption staff. Thousands Of Toys Donated For Toys For Tots In Alexandria
Alexandria Fire Chief Corey Smedley was on hand at AFD headquarters on Dec. 10 to receive more than 2,000 toys collected as part of the U.S. Marine Corps’ annual Toys for Tots campaign. Donations surpassed last year’s, with AFCEA DC collecting more than $60,000 worth of toys. More than 2,000 toys were dropped off at AFD headquarters, which will be distributing the presents to underserved children across the city. Food Network’s ‘Chopped’ Won By Alexandria Chef
Chris Edwards competed to win in an episode of Food Network’s “Chopped” that aired on Sept. 29. He is the head chef of Alexandria restaurant Hank & Mitzi’s Italian Kitchen. Edwards competed alongside another Alexandria chef — Mimi Huynh, the chef and owner of Sunday in Saigon, a modern Vietnamese restaurant in Old Town. Old Town Alexandria Welcomes Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats
On Saturday, Goodies Frozen Custard and Treats distributed sundaes shakes and treats to a line of hungry customers wrapped around the historic Ice House at 200 Commerce St. The owner Brandon Byrd and his business partner Rozell Moore operates out of a vintage, restored 1952 postal service van. The Goodies food truck currently has pop-up locations at Eastern Market in D.C. and outside of the Ice House in Alexandria.
